Gisborne East Coast and Wairoa

Harold

Overview

The Trust services a large region including Tairawhiti/East Coast, Gisborne City, Wairoa and surrounding rural areas. Our northernmost school is Potaka, our southernmost is Kotemaori and we cover inland as far as Waikaremoana and Motu.

There are 60 schools in this region including a number of Kura Kaupapa Maori, area schools and small rural schools. Most of the schools use the service annually. In 2019 our Educator worked with 4,766 children.

The Trust actively fundraise and has good support from local organisations including Rotary, Gisborne District Council, Eastland Community Trust, and a number of funding organisations and philanthropic trusts. We run a major Fight for Life event each year. We also receive support from local contractors who transport the classroom free of charge. Thanks to our supporters we are able to provide the service to schools at a low cost to help ensure that we reach every child that we possibly can.

Beau Harrison

Joining the Life Education team at the beginning of 2021 has been both a privilege and a rewarding experience. I am thankful to be in a position where I am able to work alongside our tamariki, their whānau and the wider Tairāwhiti community. I aim to empower our young people with the knowledge and skills needed to manage their own wellbeing, make healthy choices, support the wellbeing of others and learn how to communicate effectively.

My previous roles include; teaching both at a primary and intermediate level at schools in Auckland and Gisborne, working as an outdoor education instructor in the UK, swim coaching in New York and also teaching English as a second language in South Korea.

I believe that keeping both the body and mind active is essential for maintaining health and wellbeing, so in my own time I enjoy swimming laps at the Olympic Pools, surfing, getting out in nature or chilling out with a great book.

I am looking forward to sharing more of the amazing and positive messages Life Education has to offer with the awesome tamariki and kaiako in our region.
